ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1.1. Purpose & How Distributed ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Purpose & How Distributed
PROS/2 is the official newsletter of the Tampa Bay OS/2 Users' Group (TBOUG),
one of the largest OS/2 user groups in the United States. The newsletter
contains news and information of interest to the TBOUG membership and the OS/2
community in general.
WHY THE INF FORMAT?
We deliberately chose the INF file format to distribute PROS/2 not only because
it is becoming increasingly popular with OS/2 users, but it is also one of the
most efficient file formats for electronically distributing text and graphics.
Experienced users will already be familiar with the OS/2 "View" utility
(VIEW.EXE) and will be able to quickly find their way through PROS/2. If you
are a new OS/2 user, please take a moment to learn the facility. Standard Help
facilities are available to guide you through "View." In particular, review
the following features:
Under the Services action-bar-choice:
Search - to find every occurrence of a word or phrase in an on-line
document.
Print - to send to the printer one or more topics for the document you
are viewing; the index for the document; the Table of Contents for the
document.
Bookmark - to save your place in the document you are viewing, by marking
the topic displayed. You can then return to that topic later.
Copy to file - places the text you are viewing into an ASCII text file
(text.tmp). Note: This file is re-initialized each time you use the
"Copy to file" command. In other words, you may lose your text if you
are not careful.
Append to file - updates your text file (text.tmp) with additional text.
Under the Options action-bar-choice:
Expanding - provides the means to display subordinate topics in the Table
of Contents. The user can either expand one level, a selected branch, or
all. Subordinate topics are indicated when the plus sign (+) is
displayed to the left of a subject. Instead of using one of the
expanding pull-down-choices, the user can simply click on the (+) with
the mouse.
Collapsing - provides the reverse function of expanding; it removes the
display of lower level topics in the Table of Contents. The user can
collapse either a selected branch or all. Instead of using one of the
collapse pull-down-choices, the user can simply click on the minus sign
(-) to the left of the parent topic.
Index - displays an alphabetic list of references to the topics in the
document. The user can select one of the index entries to display the
related topic.
The "View" utility is accessed either by clicking on its standard icon (in the
shape of a book), or by typing the "VIEW" command, followed by the targeted
INF file, through an OS/2 Window or Full Screen. For example:
C:\VIEW PROS0896.INF
For additional information about "View," consult the following:
Select/click on the Information icon on the OS/2 Desktop, and then:
1. Select/click on the OS/2 Command Reference icon.
2. Select OS/2 Commands by Name.
3. Select VIEW.
You may also access the same information by going to the command line (an OS/2
Window or Full Screen) and typing: HELP VIEW
Printed documentation is available from IBM's OS/2 Technical Library:
Information Presentation Facility Guide and Reference.
"View" and "IPF/INF file formats" are commonly found in OS/2 related text
books.
NOTE: Windows users can now view INF files using the new INF Viewer from
SingaLab Pte. Ltd. of Singapore. Patterned after the OS/2 VIEW facility, the
Windows version provides the same functionality. The utility can be freely
obtained from a variety of sources:
Look for WIN_INF.ZIP on most computer networks and bulletin boards.
A copy of the product is available in IBM's Hyperwise (see LIBIPFX.EXE).
Use the version of the product accompanying "Just Add OS/2 Warp" (see
VIEW.EXE).
Also, IBM PC DOS 7 users can view it under DOS (without pictures) using the
VIEW.EXE supplied with that OS.
DISTRIBUTION CHANNELS
This INF file is distributed to the major computer networks and bulletin
boards. This specifically includes:
Commercial Networks:
1. America Online - In the OS/2 Forum (Ctrl+K, "os2"), under
"Newsletters."
2. CompuServe - In the "IBM OS/2 Users+" Forum (GO OS2USER), go to the
Libary & Browse the "OS/2 User Groups" section.
On the Internet:
1. FTP site: hobbes.nmsu.edu (/os2/newsltr) or (/incoming) or (/new)
2. FTP site: ftp-os2.cdrom.com (/pub/os2/incoming) or
(/pub/os2/newsltr)
Bulletin Boards:
1. TBOUG's BBS/MBA's The "PRIDE" Network (Palm Harbor, FL)
813/786-4864
2. Clarion BBS (Tampa, FL) 813/832-3851
3. OS/2 Shareware; Pete Norloff's BBS (Fairfax, VA) 703/385-4325
NOTE: With the exception of TBOUG's own BBS, the publisher does not maintain
a formal business relationship with any of the above listed carriers, other
than purely as a distribution channel for the newsletter.
The PROS/2 files may be copied and distributed free of charge. The name of
the file is PROSmmyy.ZIP (where "mm" represents the month and "yy" represents
the year; for example: PROS0896.ZIP represents the aUGUST 1996 issue).

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2. Meeting Announcement ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
DOCUMENT IMAGING WITH OS/2
FEATURED AT AUGUST 7TH MEETING
The next meeting of the Tampa Bay OS/2 Users' Group will be held Wednesday
evening, August 7th at IBM's LakePointe offices in Tampa.
COMMITTEE MEETINGS (5:45 - 6:45)
Three committee meetings will be held in parallel prior to our main meeting:
END USER EDUCATION & SUPPORT COMMITTEES
This will be a joint session of the two committees and will feature a lab
session and follow-up discussion on "Merlin," codename for the next release of
OS/2 Warp.
PRODUCTION COMMITTEE
John Meroth of Mersoft in Tampa will give a talk on how OS/2 helps him in his
daily activities as a Sysop, WebMaster, and Consultant. In particular, he will
discuss how he uses OS/2 to manage his web site. John is a software developer
specializing in DOS based small business Point of Sale Systems. He has used
OS/2 since 2.0 as his primary development platform. He now runs a three
workstation network that maintains a BBS, and mail hubbing for Tampa (FIDO) and
all of Florida for IBMNet & OS2Net. His server was upgraded to OS/2 Warp
Server and his network is now used to provide complete ISP services. John is a
member of both TBOUG and Team OS/2, and can be reached at:
jmeroth@tbos2cla.com
MAIN MEETING (7:30 - 9:00)
Imaging is the conversion of documents from a physical medium, paper for
example, to a digital form where they can be manipulated by computers for
easier access and retrieval. Most image management systems include
workstations for viewing and manipulating images; storage devices; and servers
to manage the image database, run applications software, control peripherals
and connect to host devices.
Imaging is a rapidly growing area and as costs have been lowered for computers
and storage, networks have increased in reliability display technology,
scanners, and OCR have improved, more and more organizations are implementing
the technology.
Our featured speaker for August will be Mr. Steve Pyles, an Imaging Specialist
from Xerographics. Xerographics is a leading document imaging vendor located
in St. Petersburg, Florida. (Pinellas: 813/570-8868, Tampa: 813/855-6625,
Fax: 813/578-0009). Of particular relevance to TBOUG is the fact that
Xerograhics uses OS/2 Servers for their document management systems. Mr. Pyles
will be discussing imaging and document management, addressing the use of OS/2
for their servers and demonstrating the Genesis Information Image Extender
which allows extension of imaging to any application.
Document imaging is the future. If you want to learn more about this
technology, how it is used, and where it is going, this is the presentation for
you.
EVENING MEAL
REMINDER: Do not forget to call in your meal reservations. We need to know
how many meals will be required as soon as possible. We encourage you to take
advantage of these catered meals, as the user group has to guarantee a minimum
number of meals in order to provide this important service. Failure to meet
the minimum results in an increased cost for our group. In addition to
providing an excellent meal at an affordable price, these meals offer the
opportunity to network with other members and share ideas about OS/2.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5. CONNECT THE WORLD WITH MERLIN ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
CONNECT THE WORLD WITH MERLIN
The "Connect the World with Merlin" event scheduled for Saturday, October 26th
is still snowballing in popularity. We now have volunteers from: Argentina,
Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, Czech Republic,
Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Hungary, Indonesia, Israel,
Italy, Japan, Macao, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Russia,
Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan
(ROC), Thailand, the Ukraine, the United Kingdom (locations in Scotland and
England), the United States, and Venezuela.
Simply put, the "Connect" promo idea is concerned with helping in the launch of
"Merlin" (the next major release of OS/2) by having OS/2 user groups and Team
OS/2 members conduct demos of the new product at computer stores throughout the
world. Further, the demos would all be connected through the Internet where we
would build a map showing where OS/2 is used throughout the world. The demos
would also highlight the power of OS/2, including multimedia, multitasking,
multithreading, and true 32-bit processing. The benefits of this approach
would be considerable:
It would invigorate computer stores who have historically taken a ho-hum
approach to selling OS/2.
It would dispel the belief that OS/2 isn't widely used.
It would promote sales by showcasing the features of the product.
The press would find it an interesting media event in that one computer
product was able to easily link the world together.
It would galvanize OS/2 customers (e.g., user groups and Team OS/2)
through a common promotional program.
It would be incredibly simple to do.
Since TBOUG is the host for the event, we are calling on all OS/2 enthusiasts
from around the Tampa Bay Area (whether or not you are a TBOUG member) to join
us in this international event. Your participation in any capacity would be
greatly appreciated.
